It was written in the stars that Kylian Mbappé, who was born the same year that France won its first World Cup, would grow up to help his home country win the tournament again in 2018. At age 19, he also became the youngest French goalscorer in tournament history and the second teenager to ever score two goals in a World Cup match. You could say that it’s already been quite a big year for him, so far.

Now, as a superstar forward for Paris Saint-Germain, Mbappé is on track to become one of the greats. Though he was a natural from day one, getting to this point required his total commitment. As early as five years old, Mbappé was out on the pitch, impressing coaches by out-running and out-dribbling his peers. He then started practicing with older players before joining a soccer academy and eventually making his professional team debut at 16 years old. A year later, he scored the first hat-trick of his team career.

In August 2017, at 18 years old, Mbappé was signed to the prestigious Paris Saint-Germain club, where he initially took the number 29. A year later, he started wearing 7, a number worn by many greats before him. At PSG and during the World Cup — where he totaled four goals — Mbappé has broken numerous goal-scoring records with his unstoppable talent.

Mbappé’s trajectory and future projections are bright. On the occasion of the Jordan Brand x Paris Saint-Germain collection launch in Paris, we interviewed Mbappé about the new collaboration, as well as loving the game.

What do you like about the Jordan Brand x Paris Saint-Germain collection?

It’s very nice. It’s significant, too, because we’re the first team to be kitted out by Jordan. So it’s a big deal and an honor for us! We’ll be wearing Jordan during prestigious games, where we’re playing hard to achieve greatness and make history.

The Jordan Brand has a special place in Paris. What do you think this collaboration means to Parisian youth?

The Jordan Brand definitely has an important place in Paris. A lot of young people identify themselves with it, and a lot of those same young people love Paris Saint-Germain, too. This collaboration is huge and will touch a lot of people.

What do you think the collaboration means on a global level?

It gives the club global resonance. I hope it will continue to get new people interested in the club. We have a long history, and Jordan has a long history. We’re proud, and we’ll try to do this jersey proud.

What’s your favorite piece from the lifestyle part of the collection?

I love the coaches jacket with the big Jordan Brand x Paris Saint-Germain logo on the back. It looks really strong! Putting the logos together makes it even stronger. The black jersey is elegant, rich and timeless. It’s everything we like.

What inspires you about the legacy of Jordan?

Even if football and basketball are different sports, we experience the same difficulties and the same emotions. We have a different job, but it’s the same task.

How do you and your teammates stay focused during big games?

Once you’re on the pitch, it’s just different. We know we’re playing big matches, and we know that there’s a lot of anticipation. This is a year when we have to do our best — to go as far as possible and push our limits. That’s what’s most important in this kind of competition.

You’ve had an incredible, historic year. Are you already thinking about four years from now?

I am already thinking about it, of course, even though the moment just passed. To be honest, we have big goals to reach with PSG, and I think that it’s important to focus on the present. The world stage is so special that, yes, you always think about it.

The Jordan x Paris Saint-Germain collection is available starting September 14 from select retailers. The club will debut its Jordan Brand kit on September 18 during European competition.
