Michael Thomas On The Jordan React Havoc
The wide receiver and Jordan Brand family member talks speed and motivation.
New Orleans wide receiver, Michael Thomas, breaks records like they’re nothing and competes like they’re everything. Since entering the league in 2016, he’s had the most receptions in the league, and the most receptions ever by a player in his first three seasons, despite only having the seventh-most targets in the same span. His 77 percent catch rate is equally astounding (and was also considered the best in the league during those years).
In 2018, at age 25, Thomas also set New Orleans’ franchise records for most receptions in a season (125), most yards in a season (1,405), most receptions in a game (16), and most receiving yards in a game (211). He even created his own hashtag, #NoRecordIsSafeTourVol.3.
Although Thomas grew up in a football-heavy environment in Los Angeles (his uncle is Keyshawn Johnson), he trained to become a basketball player until his junior year of high school. He has spoken about growing up admiring the hyper-focused and “greedy” styles of basketball players who have influenced his on-field mentality.
As Thomas continues his journey up the receiver ranks, he maintains his personal motto: “Control what you can control.” Within that philosophy, training and preparation are paramount, and proper gear is a necessity. Jordan Brand’s new React Havoc, with its geometric midsole and Zoom Air bag in the forefoot, is now part of Thomas’ intense running and training regimen. Below, Thomas shares how speed is central to his workouts and game.
On using speed to his advantage:
Playing the wide receiver position, speed is key for shaking off defenders and getting through my routes, in order to make sure I’m in the right spot. It’s a tool that you can always use to create separation. In the game of football, you always look for little things that can help.
On training to improve his speed:
I have to build enough power in my legs. I run a ton and do a lot of explosive drills that translate to quickness and speed.

On advice for younger athletes:
The off-season is where you separate yourself. It’s where you enhance your weaknesses. It’s when you focus on the fundamentals.
On joining the Jordan Brand family:
It feels like we are the chosen ones. Not many people can be a part of something special like this. After watching MJ and going to his camp, it was always a dream to be a part of this. The way MJ competed on the basketball court was inspiring. I’ve always appreciated the competitiveness he had, and I try to translate that to my game as much as possible.
