Russell Westbrook On His Jordan Brand x Converse Collab Pack
The Brodie talks about pairing an AJXVI and a Chuck 70. Because “Why not?!”
Russell Westbrook can do both. He can be an all-star athlete and a fashion icon. He can be a loving family man and a fierce competitor. He can be a creative business mogul and a compassionate activist. And he can effortlessly rock both Jordan Brand and Converse sneakers.
The collaborative Jordan “Why Not?” x Converse Pack represents Russ’ impressive duality and “why not” mentality, through an Air Jordan XVI and a Converse Chuck 70 (a modern version of the OG Chuck Taylor All Star). Though the two revolutionary silhouettes are rooted in basketball, they have each served loyal fans off the court.
Russell Westbrook wore both shoes on September 10 and 12 in the 2020 NBA Bubble
As one of the most ubiquitous sneakers in the world, the Converse Chuck Taylor All Star has long been a staple of expression. “My first pair of Converse were blue low top Chucks,” says Russ. “Chucks are an everyday shoe for me, and growing up, they were affordable.” Like Russ, the Converse Chuck Taylor All Star has transcended all boxes or expectations. Born as a performance basketball sneaker, the shoe and its timeless design have been adopted by subcultures around the globe, becoming synonymous with both west coast and rockstar style. Many of Russ’ pre-game tunnel walks have been complemented by various low- and high-top Chucks.
Blending high-fashion details with the outdoor streetball aesthetic of his childhood, “working out with my dad and brother,” he says, Russ’ Chuck 70 collaboration comes in a light Egret colorway with embroidery and a crackled leather upper. “I love the sole and the toe shape of the Chuck 70,” describes Russ. “It allows you to dress the shoe up or dress it down.” The All Star patch and “Why Not?” tongue logo are crafted out of silver metal, and studs on the heel mirror the studs found on the AJXVI.
In contrast to the white Chuck, the AJXVI comes in black with mesh heel details and premium, shiny leather on the toe. “I love the AJXVI, because it’s two shoes in one,” explains Russ. “With the shroud on or off, you have two different vibes. I had a pair when I was younger, and I picked it [for this collaboration], because I haven’t seen other people do packs with it before.” Whereas the Chuck is known for its simple construction and design, the AJXVI is known for that sophisticated shroud. A metal-studded, removable and magnetic shroud combines with silver accents, a metal “Why Not?” logo on the tongue and an embossed logo on the heel.
As for the choice to make the pack monochrome, particularly given his colorful style and PEs as of late, Russ says, “I wanted to do something stealth, with different accents that come to life through these colors. I wanted this pack to be something people could wear and [have it] not just be about me. I have been a fan of Converse for a very long time, and doing a pack with Jordan too is great in itself.”
The Jordan “Why Not?” x Converse Pack by Russell Westbrook is available starting October 2 on SNKRS and at select retailers. While the Converse Chuck 70 typically runs a half size large, both the Converse Chuck 70 and Air Jordan XVI in this pack fit true to size.
