From Russ: The Why Not? Zer0.2 “Future History”
Russell Westbrook talks about the debut of his new performance shoe and its youth-inspired colorway.
Words: Russell Westbrook
In the “From Russ” series, Russell Westbrook tells the stories behind each colorway of the Why Not? Zer0.2. Each version is inspired by important people and moments in Westbrook’s life, including his family and his fans.
When it comes to people who inspire me, I learn just as much from the youth as I do from my mentors. It all starts with my children. I see my son, Noah, growing and expanding his imagination every day. His laugh, or even his excitement to see me when I walk through the door, is enough to make me stop and realize how blessed I am. I know that one day, he, my daughters and all the other kids out there will become the leaders and legends of tomorrow — our “Future History,” as I like to call it.
Looking back, I’d tell myself to remain confident and always trust my journey. “Not only will you become the starting point guard on the varsity squad as a junior,” I’d say, “but in 15 years, you’ll become the NBA MVP.” And while a lot of people thought that hoisting the bronze MVP trophy was the highlight of my 2016-2017 season, the truth is that one the highlights of my entire life happened just a month before that moment, when I had my first child, Noah.
The left heel of each WN0.2 has an external tag highlighting the shoe’s color palette and colorway name.
My family and the youth, in general, inspire me constantly. I made sure that the “Future History” colorway of the new Why Not? Zer0.2 would be available for boys and girls of all ages. I even had our design team put my family crest on the tongue of the shoe. The shoe’s hidden “Why Not” logos are an ode to my foundation and the mentality that has played a significant part in my success.
The “Future History” colorway references the various team colors worn by Russell Westbrook since high school.
Let’s just say that the moment I saw an early prototype of the “Future History” WN0.2, I tossed a previous version across the room and told the design team, “This is the one.” Every detail and color represents my past, including uniforms that have defined my journey and people who’ve made me the man I am today.
When I lace these up, I’m reminded of why I do what I do — my family and all the kids who have dreams like I did. Every kid deserves encouragement to become the best versions of themselves. I’ll continue to do everything I can to make sure that the next generation always has that feeling.
The Why Not Zer0.2 releases in men’s sizes globally on January 10 and in all sizes later this month.
