The Air Jordan 3 White/Red
A colorway legendary for its impact on the hardwood, history books and community.
With thanks to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
Each person who comes across the White/Red Air Jordan 3 gets to interpret it in their own unique way. Stories that started in the community have the power to become part of history. The White/Red Air Jordan 3 is legendary for its impact on the hardwood, history books and community.
2003: Born On The Hardwood
After being selected to be part of the first Jordan Brand athlete roster in 1997, Derek Anderson was given special access to many player exclusive (PE) shoes throughout his time with the brand. None of those pairs have taken on the life and legend of the White/Red Air Jordan 3s he wore in 2003.
“Being gifted special edition sneakers is always an important moment, but you can never predict how legendary they become to fans. What was, for me, a luxury performance shoe to wear on court came to symbolize much more.”
Though they never released while Anderson was playing, they soon became known for something much bigger than basketball.
2006: The Community Rename
To help raise funds for Hurricane Katrina relief, Jordan Brand donated a special collection of shoes to be auctioned off in 2006. Included in the collection was a rare pair of White/Red Air Jordan 3s. While this pair was an identical colorway to the PE worn by Derek Anderson, it didn’t include his number and other PE touches. Instead, this pair would quickly be referred to as the Air Jordan 3 “Katrina” by the sneaker community. The rest of the collection featured OG colorways that MJ wore, leaving all eyes on that mysterious Air Jordan 3.
“We’ve seen the Jumpman community nickname pairs over the years but this one was different,” says Howard ‘H’ White, VP of Brand.
“Our intention was to contribute to the auction to help out in any way we could and we never imagined one of the shoes in it would carry on a legacy of its own. The importance of that legacy is not lost on us, as it is tied to the incredible people of New Orleans and their unbreakable spirit.”
While this colorway of the Air Jordan 3 existed before the relief auction, it’s impossible to ignore the part of its history that’s become the most notable. The collection was auctioned off to a silent bidder and has not been seen publicly since.
2009: Hall of Fame
In celebration of Michael Jordan being inducted to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2009, a special “Become Legendary” collection of Air Jordans was curated to be displayed in Springfield, MA. Once again, the White/Red Air Jordan III was included amongst classic colorways.
“This shoe has turned up in very important places and it really shows how knowledgeable and passionate the community is about Jordan. They’ve helped tell this story from an on-court PE to what it has become now.”
– Howard ‘H’ White, VP of Brand
2018: The Legacy
With another upcoming release of the White/Red Air Jordan 3, it was important to tell its story in full, whether the chapter was written by the brand or by the community. To honor the community-driven part of this special Air Jordan 3 story, the Jordan Wings program has teamed up with local New Orleans educational partners to award 10 scholarships to graduating high school seniors.
The Air Jordan 3 White/Red will be available on 5/12/2018
